The Gamma-ray Blazar Content of the Northern Sky

Using survey data, we have re-evaluated the correlation of flat spectrum radio sources with EGRET sources in the Northern sky. A likelihood analysis incorporating the radio and X-ray properties and the γ-ray source localization is used to gauge the reliability of associations and to search for counterparts of previously unidentified EGRET sources. Above |b|=10, where the classification is compl...

High-(Energy)-Lights The Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Sky

The high-lights of ground-based very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gammaray astronomy are reviewed. The summary covers both Galactic and extragalactic sources. Implications for our understanding of the non-thermal Universe are discussed. Identified VHE sources include various types of supernova remnants (shell-type, mixed morphology, composite) including pulsar wind nebulae, and X-ray binary s...

Imaging the Gamma-ray Sky with Spi aboard Integral

The spectrometer SPI on INTEGRAL allows for the first time simultaneous imaging of diffuse and point-like emission in the hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray regime. To fully exploit the capabilities of the instrument, we implemented the MREM image deconvolution algorithm, initially developed for COMPTEL data analysis, to SPI data analysis. We present the performances of the algorithm by means of sim...

Anisotropy of the sky distribution of gamma-ray bursts

The isotropy of gamma-ray bursts collected in current BATSE catalog is studied. It is shown that the quadrupole term being proportional to ∼ sin 2b sin l is non-zero with a probability of 99.9%. The occurrence of this anisotropy term is then confirmed by the binomial test even with the probability of 99.97 %. Hence, the sky distribution of all known gamma-ray bursts is anisotropic. It is also a...

Studying the High-energy Gamma-ray Sky with Glast

Building on the success of the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) will make a major step in the study of such subjects as blazars, gamma-ray bursts, the search for dark matter, supernova remnants, pulsars, diffuse radiation, and unidentified high-energy sources. The instrument will be built on n...
